Sport Fishing Alaska Kodiak Island - Zachar Bay Lodge

Guided Sport Fishing

Memorable fishing adventures

Zachar Bay Lodge offers freshwater and saltwater fishing trips to excite anglers of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re a veteran deepsea angler, a seasoned fly-fishing purist, or a total novice, the lodge has plenty to offer you.

Guides know the best locations and the best techniques for catching halibut. At Zachar Bay you’ll have the special privilege of fishing in calm, shallow waters not far from the lodge. That means more fishing time and less seasickness. It also means you can fight those monster fish on much lighter tackle. In the same waters you can also troll for bright, acrobatic silver salmon, as well as trophy king salmon.

Zachar Bay Lodge offers fly-out fishing trips to remote Frazer Lake. At Frazer you can fish for red salmon- and you won’t be fishing alone. Frazer Lake is home to Kodiak’s famed Kodiak Brown Bear. This is an unforgettable, real Alaskan experience for both flyfishermen and spin-fishermen.

You can also join a hike up a pristine river where you can catch silver, chum, and pink salmon as well as dolly vardens until your arms ache. You can even have fresh fish grilled over an open fire, prepared by your guide. You won’t be disappointed with the fishing here. But fishing is only the start! There are many other activities to enjoy. In fact, the possibilities are endless.

Your catch is expertly filleted and processed at the end of the fishing day. The fillets are individually vacuum sealed, labeled and frozen during your stay. We provide airline approved wax boxes for transporting your catch home.

"The sockeye salmon runon Frazer was strong. Fishing them was a thrill although not foul hooking these fish was hard at times.

The dollies on the Zachar River took silver spinners and spoons on the swing when fished slow and deep. Bites came very often at the end of the retrieve. With the fly, they took egg pattern and leeches and minnow patterns (gray - silver).

Great fishing, little rain and terrific hosts made this an unforgettable experience! Thank you!"

    Gear & Equipment

We have all the equipment needed to outfit you for our fishing trips, including deep sea fishing rods and tackle, spinning rods, rain jackets, pants and boots, and waders for stream fishing. Below is a description about our equipment. If you want to bring your owm, we can provide you with a suggested list of things to bring.

    Saltwater Gear

Zachar Bay Lodge has three custom made aluminum fishing boats designed specifically for using in the Zachar Bay area. They range from 23’ to 26’ and are easily beached for shore lunches. The tackle that we use and provide for fishing out of the boats depends on the species of fish that we are targeting. When trolling for salmon our guides typically spin blue label herring attached to a Pro-Troll Rotary and Big Fin Salmon Killer setup with a 6-foot leader that attaches to a banana sinker. We also have several different types of spoons and spinners when the salmon are in thick. Common artificial lures that we use are the Blue Fox Pixee, Mepps Cyclops and T-Spoon spinners. Most of our trolling rods are 7-8 feet in length. All reels have line counters loaded with 25-pound test mono filament line. For halibut fishing, the boat is typically anchored in 50-300 feet of water and the bait is fished on the bottom using either a jig or circle hook and lead. The heavy setup is a 6 foot medium action rod with a heavy-duty reel that has 80 pound test braided spectre line. Usually with this setup you would fish with a circle hook with salted herring bait and 12oz lead sinker or a 12-oz jig baited with herring.

    Freshwater / Stream Gear

The equipment and tackle that we use and provide for fishing the nearby rivers and lakes are spinning rods that are two-piece, 6’6” medium action with 14-pound test mono filament line. The rods are typically Shakespeare Ugly Sticks and the reels are Shimano. Salmon and trout in Kodiak can be caught on almost any type of lure -- as long as it is shiny and has a hook! We typically use Blue Fox Pixee spoons, Mepps spinners and lures similar to these. Occasionally we will drift salmon eggs or salmon flies.
